New Tricks is a long running comedy police drama series about a team of retired police officers looking to solve cold cases. UCOS – the fictional Unsolved Crime and Open Cases Squad is a specialised police department where having some age and wisdom is an advantage. This is hard to see sometimes as the team struggle with modern events and technology but they always get to the bottom of the unsolved crime, which they often remember from the old days.
 “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” as the saying goes but in New Tricks these old dogs usually manage to win out via a combination of old fashioned police skills and craftiness.

The team is headed by Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman, the youngest member of the team and in her 50s. She is aided by Jack Halford (played by veteran actor James Bolam) , Brian Lane played by Alun Armstrong and Gerry Standing played by Dennis Waterman. The team all have their eccentricities and much of the drama is around the way that they interact as well as each ones own particular approach to police work and detection.
This original cast were with the show since its inception in 2003 but after its 9th year and season, there were changes. James Bolam quit the show in 2012 and was replaced by retired Detective Inspector Steve McAndrew played by actor Denis Lawson.

Following the 10th season in 2013 it was announced that Brian Lane was to be replaced with Danny Griffith played by Nicholas Lyndhurst and Sandra Pullman by Sacha Millard played by Tamsin Outhwaite.
New Tricks has been extremely popular during its run and although the 10 th season sees only Gerry Standing (Denis Waterman) as the sole original cast member, it looks set to continue for a while longer.
